LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Shauna Barbeau, of Midland, to the Early Childhood Investment Corporation.
The 18-member committee is the state's expert group for information on and investment in early childhood programs, which help ensure that children enter kindergarten safe, healthy and eager to learn.
"Early childhood programs are the foundation for long-term educational success," said Snyder. "Shauna's extensive experience in providing quality family care makes her a great choice for this post."
Barbeau is a family nurse practitioner with Health Delivery Inc. - Janes Street Academic Community Health Center in Saginaw, where she provides preventative and acute health care services to citizens of all ages. In this capacity, she also collaborates with various community resources and local services, including the county Community Mental Health and the Michigan Department of Human Services. Previously, Barbeau worked as a family nurse practitioner in Spokane, Wash. and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a flight nurse captain. During Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom, she served as medical crew director, where she assisted returning injured servicemen and servicewomen. Barbeau holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Seattle University and Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., respectively.
Barbeau will serve the remainder of a four-year term that expires July 22, 2012, a result of the resignation of Janet Olszewski. Her appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
