LANSING, Mich.-Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Laura Hughes, of Detroit, to the Commission on Community Action and Economic Opportunity.
Established in 1981, the commission seeks to mitigate the causes and effects of poverty as well as promote self-sufficiency and economic opportunity.
"Helping the economically disadvantaged to overcome those challenges is important to reinventing Michigan," said Snyder. "Laura's years of experience and expertise will be of great benefit and I thank her for her willingness to serve."
Hughes is executive director of the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit and Highland Park, where she is responsible for setting strategic vision, goals and objectives for a homeless, runaway and throwaway safety net provider. Previously, Hughes worked with the Wayne County Department of Public Health as an HIV/STD manager, served as grants manager for the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and was a program coordinator for the Detroit Medical Center Sinai Grace Hospital HIV/AIDS program. Hughes holds a bachelor's degree in sociocultural anthropology from Brown University in Rhode Island, a master's degree in public health from the University of Michigan and attended the University of California at Los Angeles Anderson School of Management - Johnson & Johnson Health Care Executive program.
Hughes will represent Community Action Agencies for a three-year term that expires June 21, 2014, and her appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
