LANSING, Mich. ? Gov. Rick Snyder issued the following statement today after Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Roy Roberts announced his decision to retire on May 16 when his contract expires:
"Detroiters and Michiganders alike can be thankful for Roy's leadership over the past two years as we continue to improve the city's educational system and help ensure students are getting the education they need and deserve. His problem solving skills, expertise and strong management and leadership abilities have tremendously benefitted the students, teachers, administrators, and families of the Detroit Public Schools as well as the neighborhoods, city and region.
"He has been successful in restoring fiscal responsibility, including reducing spending, saving money and balancing budgets. The plan that Roy and his team have implemented is working and it is making a difference in students' lives. Today, more resources are being directed in the classroom so teachers can focus on teaching. Schools are safer, more parents are involved, attendance is up, test scores are improving across the board, and more seniors are graduating.
"These are all tangible results from the work of Roy and his team. I appreciate his service and dedication."
The governor committed to finding the best qualified successor as soon as possible to help ensure continuity and a smooth transition.
