Appointment made to Michigan Waterways Commission

Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed Monique "Nicki" Polan, of White Lake, to the Michigan Waterways Commission.

She will serve out the remainder of a three-year appointment expiring Sept. 18, 2013, replacing Van Snider, who resigned.

"Nicki has a wealth of experience in the boating industry and I appreciate her stepping up to serve the Great Lakes State on this commission," said Snyder.

Polan became executive director of the Michigan Boating Industries Association in 2013, and has been with the association since 1988. She is treasurer of the Michigan Clean Marina Foundation, and a member of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, the National Marine Trades Council and the Tourism Industry Association of Michigan. Polan has a bachelor's degree in political science and economics from Michigan State University, and a master's degree in business management and marketing from Walsh College.

Polan's appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the state Senate.

Housed within the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the seven-member commission is responsible for the acquisition, construction and maintenance of recreational harbors, channels, docking and launching facilities, and administration of commercial docks in the Straits of Mackinac.
