Snyder signs low income energy assistance legislation

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today signed a bill to create a fund for low income energy assistance in Michigan.

"This is an important bill that will provide a long-term solution to help Michigan's most vulnerable citizens with their home energy and heating needs," Snyder said.

Senate Bill 284, sponsored by state Sen. Mike Nofs, creates the Low Income Energy Assistance Fund (LIEAF). It authorizes the Public Service Commission to raise up to $50 million for low income energy assistance in Michigan. An additional $10 million from federal funds for heating assistance will be put into LIEAF to ensure the program can reach Michiganders statewide.  LIEAF replaces the Vulnerable Household Warmth Fund, which expired in 2012.

SB 284 is now Public Act 95 of 2013.
