Snyder proclaims Hire a Veteran Month; connects veterans with career opportunities

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today declared November as Hire a Veteran Month and announced a series of upcoming career fairs for veterans. He urged Michigan employers to consider veterans when making hiring decisions and help returning veterans make the transition from military service to employment.

“Michigan’s nearly 700,000 veterans have sacrificed and bravely defended our nation,” Snyder said. “With their experience and training, they are ready to offer Michigan employers a wide range of business, technical and leadership skills. These returning heroes bring real-world work experience and transferrable skills to the job – qualities Michigan employers can tap to benefit their businesses and help grow Michigan’s economy.”

Snyder announced Operation Vet Connection 2013, a series of career fairs taking place Nov. 4-8 that are designed to build connections between employers with available positions and veterans looking for new career opportunities.

More than 100 Michigan businesses have registered to participate in Vet Connection 2013 events around Michigan, providing veterans an opportunity to network with hiring employers, showcase their skills and specialized training, and schedule job interviews. Sponsored by the Workforce Development Agency – Veterans’ Services Division, the Michigan Army National Guard, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, and the Michigan Air National Guard, the career fairs are exclusively for veterans and are not be open to the general public.

The events are free for veterans and registration is not required. Veterans who attend should bring a current resume, transcripts or training records, and a photo ID. For the list of Vet Connection 2013 dates and locations, visit

The Veterans’ Service Division, in conjunction with the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, is also offering a new program that will provide veterans with free IT training. Details of the program will be announced on Nov. 13.

The Michigan Veterans’ Services Division is charged with helping Michigan veterans and their eligible spouses find employment or start a business. Veterans’ employment specialists housed in local Michigan Works! offices around the state offer a variety of services to both veterans and employers, including:

  • Evaluating veterans’ skills and developing effective job search plans.
  • Educating employers on the benefits of hiring veterans, and helping them find skilled veterans for available positions.
  • Identifying training and educational options to help veterans improve their employability.
  • Helping returning veterans access federal, state and local resources available to help with the transition from military service to employment.

“We should be focused on easy access to employment-related information and resources for all Michigan residents, especially our veterans. We need to ensure employers understand the value of military service and education,” said WDA Director Christine Quinn. “And we need to assist our veterans by taking their military experiences and translating them into private sector skills demanded by employers. We must break down silos by working together toward a common goal – jobs for all Michigan residents, including our veterans.”
