Monday, June 2, 2014

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Julia Owdziej to the Washtenaw County Probate Court.

“As an established legal professional, Julia has demonstrated a strong commitment to our state’s court system,” Snyder said. “I am confident she will continue to serve the people of Washtenaw County well.”

Owdziej has over three decades of experience as a practicing attorney. She currently serves as deputy register at the Washtenaw Probate Court where she advises all legal matters and oversees minor guardianship and conservatorship hearings. She is a referee at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Court, presiding over a variety of juvenile delinquent and abuse and neglect hearings.

Previously, Owdziej worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Washtenaw County and served as a state of Michigan assistant attorney general. She previously served on the board of directors of the COPE alternative education program and was a member of the Washtenaw County Child Death Review Team, Michigan School-Justice partnership and the Washtenaw County task force on educating at risk youth.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University and a degree from the Detroit College of law.

Owdziej fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Nancy C. Wheeler. She must seek election for a six-year term this November.
