LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Michael Deprez, of Sterling Heights, as acting state fire marshal, after accepting the resignation of current fire marshal Richard Miller.
“Mike Deprez brings extensive training and more than 30 years of experience to this position, and I am confident he will continue to ensure the highest standards and responsiveness when it comes to safeguarding citizens and property from fire-related emergencies,” said Snyder. “I’m appreciative of Rich’s service and all that he did to promote fire safety, prevention and protection for Michigan residents.”
The state fire marshal leads the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services within the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, and also serves as a member, or ex-officio member, of the State Fire Safety Board, Fire Fighters Training Council and State Board of Mechanical Rules.
Deprez has served as Bureau of Fire Services deputy director since 2013. He previously served as fire chief of the City of Sterling Heights and has more than two decades of local government experience in fire services. Deprez holds professional state licenses as a paramedic and an emergency medical service instructor coordinator. He has also previously served on the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council and was named council chair in 2011 by Gov. Snyder.
He received a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health from Madonna University. Miller had served as the state fire marshal since February 2012.
