Gov. Snyder released the following statement after the Democratic debate in Flint:
"In the coming days, political candidates will be leaving Flint and Michigan. They will not be staying to help solve the crisis, but I am committed to the people of Flint. I will fix this crisis and help move Flint forward. Long-term solutions are what the people of Flint need and what I am focused on delivering for them."
The governor has proposed more than $230 million in spending on resources for Flint residents. Secured funding totals $70 million since Oct. 1, 2015, and includes:
• Supplying more than 439,775 cases of free bottled water, 108,456 water faucet filters, 227,041 filter replacement cartridges, and 40,887 testing kits for Flint residents;
• $30 million to the city of Flint to credit residents’ water bills going back to April 2014;
• Nine new nurses in local schools to monitor student health and well-being;
• Providing better nutrition for students and infants through WIC and in-school nutrition programs;
• Funding 100 mobile food pantries for residents;
• Replacing fixtures in schools, daycares, nursing homes and hospitals;
• Providing for an infrastructure study using independent experts;
• Treating any children who have high lead levels in the blood, using diagnostic testing, nurse visits and environmental assessments in the home;
• Providing additional community education opportunities within the Genesee County Health Department;
• Continued Michigan National Guard presence to support water distribution;
• Assistance with home lead abatement costs;
• $2 million to the city of Flint to help kick off Mayor Karen Weaver’s Fast Start lead pipe replacement program;
• Hiring more than 200 Flint residents to assist with water distribution and testing.
