First Lady Sue Snyder: Michigan should be a leader in the fight against campus sexual assault

Gov. Snyder proclaims April “Sexual Assault Awareness Month”

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

LANSING, Mich. – First Lady Sue Snyder issued the following statement recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month:

“April is sexual assault awareness month across the country and I encourage Michiganders to join the fight to prevent assault not just this month but all year long,” Sue Snyder said.

“Sexual assault is an issue that has been gaining national attention. In Michigan we believe prevention is possible. It has been an honor to use my voice to help bring awareness to this sensitive but important issue, especially in regard to assault prevention among the college age population.

“Our state has a strong track record of working as one to address tough challenges and in 2015, Michigan became the first state to allocate general fund budget dollars to support statewide efforts by our colleges and universities’ to help make our campuses – our students’ home away from home – safer.

“We can be proud of the steps we’ve taken together to help make our state a leader in the fight against campus sexual assault. There is a lot of great work being done but there is always more we can do. I look forward to what can be accomplished in 2016 and beyond. We’ve started the statewide conversation and now is not the time to rest. With continued collaboration between the higher education community, students and the state we can help ensure Michigan remains a positive voice in this important effort.

“I hope we reach a day when sexual assault is not a common problem, until then everyone can be an advocate for its prevention. We must continue the conversation and work together to ultimately end sexual assault.”
