Lt. Gov. Brian Calley makes appointment, reappointment to the Appellate Defender Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Lt. Gov. Brian Calley today announced the appointment of Douglas Mains of Lansing and the reappointment of Thomas Adams of Detroit to the Appellate Defender Commission.

The seven-member commission develops a system of indigent appellate defense services and oversees the State Appellate Defender Office and Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System.

“I thank Doug and Thomas for their service on this important commission and look forward to their future contributions to Michigan’s judicial system,” Calley said.  

Appointment:
Mains is an attorney with Dykema Gossett PLLC, in Lansing, a position he has held since 2015.  Prior to joining Dykema, Mains was deputy legal counsel and senior policy advisor for the Michigan House Republican Policy Office. Mains earned his bachelor’s degree in government from Cornell University, his law degree from the University of Mississippi, and his Master of Laws degree from the University of Alabama. He is the State Bar of Michigan’s designee and will replace John Nussbaumer.

Reappointment:
Adams is the President of the Chance for Life Organization, a group that addresses the needs of incarcerated adults and juveniles who are released from prison and returning to communities. He is also Founder and President of TJA Staffing Services, Inc. (formally T.J. Adams & Associates). Adams holds a bachelor’s degree in science from Tuskegee University in Alabama. He will continue to serve as the Governor’s designee.

Mains will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring May 24, 2019, and Adams will serve a four-year term expiring May 24, 2020.
