Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments and reappointments to the Board of Dentistry

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Peter Chiaravalli of DeWitt and Gregory Heintschel of Petoskey, and the reappointments of Rita Hale of Munising, Paula Weidig of Fort Gratiot, and Timothy Schmakel of Bloomfield Hills to the Michigan Board of Dentistry.
Housed in the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, the 19-member board assists in overseeing and regulating the practice of dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.
"These individuals bring decades of experience to this board," Snyder said. "I am confident they will do substantial work to ensure improved quality of oral health services for all Michiganders."
Appointed:
Chiavaralli recently retired after 41 years in private practice. He has served as an adjunct clinical associate professor as well as chair of the Alumni Visiting Committee at the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry. He holds a bachelor’s degree and doctorate of dental surgery from the University of Michigan. He will represent dentists and replace Deborah Manos.
Heintschel is the president and CEO of My Community Dental Centers. He previously served as the chief dental officer for Michigan Community Dental Clinics, and was an adjunct clinical faculty member at the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry. Heintschel holds a bachelor’s degree in education and biology from the University of Toledo, a master’s in business administration from Lawrence Technological University and a doctorate in dental surgery from Ohio State University. He will represent dentists and replace Nicholas Bournias.
Reappointed:
Hale is a customer service employee for Pictured Rocks Cruises. She served as a member of the Friends of Munising Public Library board. She attended Jackson Business University, and will continue to represent the general public.
Schmakel is owner of Timothy Schmakel DDS MD PC, a private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He serves as an adjunct professor for the University of Detroit's School of Dentistry. Schmakel is a member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He holds a bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University, a doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Oklahoma, and a medical degree from Wayne State University. He will continue to represent dentists with health profession specialty certifications.
Weidig is a dental hygienist at James Batak DDS. Previously, she served as a dental hygiene clinical lab assistant at Baker College in Port Huron and a general health sciences adjunct instructor at Baker College. Weidig is a member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and past president of the Michigan Dental Hygienists' Association. She holds an associate degree in dental hygiene from Baker College in Port Huron, a bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University, and a master's degree in education from Central Michigan University. She will continue to represent dental hygienists.
Members serve four-year terms expiring June 30, 2020. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
