Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments, reappointments to the Commission on Community Action and Economic Opportunity

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Kortni Campbell of Greenville and Matthew Purcell of Burton as well as the reappointment of Sonjalita Hulbert of Kalamazoo and Jacob Maas of Grand Rapids to the Commission on Community Action and Economic Opportunity.

The 12-member commission is charged with reducing the causes, conditions, and effects of poverty and promoting social and economic opportunities that foster self-sufficiency for low-income people.

“I appreciate this talented and diverse group of appointees and I look forward to their ongoing contributions to this commission,” Snyder said.

Appointments: 

Campbell is serving her second term as Head Start Policy Council President for  EightCap, Inc. and also serves on the EightCap, Inc. Governing Board. She will represent low-income persons and replace Kimberly Ruiz.

Purcell is executive director for Genesee County Community Action Resource Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from the University of Michigan. He will represent community action agencies.

Reappointment:

Hulbert is the Supervisor of Community Development for AETNA/Coventry Cares of Michigan. She previously served as a laboratory technician in the U.S. Army, and serves as chair for the Kalamazoo County Head Start Policy Council. Hulbert holds an associate of arts from Kalamazoo Valley Community College and bachelor of arts in family life education from Spring Arbor University. She will continue to represent community action agencies.

Maas is the chief executive officer of the Area Community Services Employment & Training Council overseeing Community Action in Kent County and West Michigan Works! programs. He also serves as the chair of the Workforce and Economic Development Subcommittee of the Kent County Essential Needs Taskforce. Maas holds a bachelor’s degree from Hope College.  He will represent the private sector and replace Dennis Echelbarger.

Purcell will serve the remainder of a three-year term to expire June 21, 2018. Campbell, Maas, and Hulbert will serve three-year terms expiring June 21, 2019. Appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
