Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment to the Michigan Civil Service Commission

Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Jase Bolger of Grand Rapids to the Michigan Civil Service Commission.

The bipartisan, four-member commission classifies all positions in the state’s classified service according to their respective duties and responsibilities; fixes compensation rates for all classes of positions; makes rules and regulations covering personnel transactions; and regulates conditions of employment in the classified service. It also appoints a state personnel director to implement the commission’s decisions. The commission cannot have more than two members of the same political party.

"Jase has many years of public service experience that will serve him well on this commission. I am confident he will do a good job ensuring we have the right rules in place to help dedicated state employees excel while providing good oversight for taxpayers," Snyder said.

Bolger is president of Tusker Strategies, which specializes in public policy advising. He was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2008 and served as Speaker of the House from 2011-2014. Previously, Bolger served two terms on the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners.

Bolger holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Michigan University. He will replace Thomas (Mac) Wardrop and represent Republicans.

Commission members serve eight-year, staggered terms. Bolger’s term expires Dec. 31, 2024.
