Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment, reappointment to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Jeffrey Sakwa of Birmingham as well as the reappointment of Laura Reyes Kopack of Livonia to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission.

The eight-member board protects civil rights and investigates alleged discrimination against any person. No more than four members can be from the same political party.

"I thank Jeffrey and Laura for their commitment to protecting the rights of all Michigan residents," said Snyder.

Appointment:

Sakwa is the president of Noble Realty Inc. as well as president and founder of the anti-bullying charity Defeat the Label. He serves on the board of the Oakland Schools Education Foundation. Sakwa holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Michigan State University. He will represent Republicans and replaces Arthur Horwitz.

Reappointment:

Kopack is the Director of Governmental Affairs and Community Relations for the Mechanical Contractors Association. She also serves as president and legal counsel of Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development, Inc. Kopack holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wayne State University and a law degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy. She will continue to represent Republicans.

Members will serve four-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2020. Appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
