Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments to the Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Luis Canales of Saginaw and JoAnn Crary of Frankenmuth to the Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control.

The eight-person board is the governing body of the University.

"Luis and JoAnn are integral members of the Saginaw community and I thank them for their commitment to the Univerity," Snyder said.

Canales is the executive director of global corporate affairs for Nexteer Automotive, where he is responsible for the company’s internal and external communications, public relations, public affairs, and sustainability reporting. He is one of the founders of the Great Lakes Bay Hispanic Leadership Institute, serves on the executive committee of the Saginaw Community Foundation, and is a member of the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Canales holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame as well as a master’s degree in international business management from Dartmouth College. He will replace Cathy Ferguson.

Crary is the president of Saginaw Future, Inc., a private, nonprofit alliance which works to generate new investment and job growth in Saginaw County. She received the Great Lakes Bay Business Women Leaders Award in 2015 and received Honorary Life Member and Fellow Member designations from the International Economic Development Council. Crary holds a bachelor’s degree in business education from Ferris State University and a master’s degree in business from Central Michigan University. She will replace David Gamez.

Crary and Canales will serve eight-year terms expiring July 21, 2025. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the state Senate.
