Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment to the Elevator Safety Board

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the reappointment of Douglas Datema of Grand Rapids, Thomas (Mike) Nelson of Springport and Michael Vandervennet of Livonia to the Michigan Elevator Safety Board.

The 11-member board assists the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs with guidelines, preparation of examinations, and issuance of elevator contractor licenses.

“I thank these individuals for their continued commitment and service to this board,” Snyder said.

Datema is the general manager for Otis Elevator Company and previously served as a field operations manager, account and project executive, and manufacturing engineer with the company. Datema holds an associate’s degree in manufacturing technology from Grand Rapids Junior College, a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering from Western Michigan University, and a master of business administration from St. Ambrose University. He will continue to represent manufacturers of elevators used in this state.

Nelson is a FB Partners Group Manager for Farm Bureau Insurance. He has 18 years of experience as a professional in the insurance industry. Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Northwood University.  He will continue to represent insurance companies authorized to insure elevators.

Vandervennet is a business agent for the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local #36 and an instructor at the National Elevator Industry Educational Program. He is a licensed journeyperson through the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit. He holds an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech Community College. Vandervennet will continue to represent the elevator constructors’ union.

Appointees will serve four-year terms expiring July 22, 2021. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
