Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment to the Detroit Financial Review Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Ike McKinnon of Detroit to the Detroit Financial Review Commission.

The Commission was created by the “Grand Bargain” legislative package, Public Act 181 of 2014, to ensure both the City of Detroit and the Detroit Public Schools Community District are meeting statutory requirements, review and approve their budgets, and establish programs and requirements for prudent fiscal management, among other roles and responsibilities.

Statutorily required members of the commission include: State Treasurer Nick Khouri, who serves as chairperson; State Budget Director Al Pscholka, who serves as the designee of the director of the Department of Technology, Management and Budget; Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan; Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones; Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti; and Detroit Public Schools Community District School Board Chairperson Dr. Iris Taylor.

"I believe Ike will be a great addition to this board and I am confident he will continue to ensure the city of Detroit remains on a positive financial track,” Snyder said.

McKinnon is an associate professor of education at the University of Detroit Mercy and CEO of the Isaiah McKinnon Group, LLC. He previously served as the deputy mayor for the City of Detroit, as a safety consultant for WDIV-TV, and as chief of the City of Detroit Police Department. McKinnon holds a bachelor’s degree in history and law enforcement from Detroit Mercy, a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Detroit, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Michigan State University. He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Tony Saunders.

McKinnon will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring Nov. 9, 2019.
