LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the reappointments of William Fales of Kalamazoo and Victor Fitz of Cassopolis to the Crime Victim Services Commission.
The commission oversees the Crime Victim Compensation Program, which helps pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses, grief counseling, lost earnings, funeral bills, and crime scene cleanup to eligible crime victims who may have suffered a physical injury. The commission also manages certain state and federal victim assistance grants.
"I thank William and Victor for the work they do on this commission to ensure victims of crime receive proper restitution," Snyder said.
Fales is the chief of the division of EMS and Disaster Medicine, program director for the EMS Fellowship Program, and associate professor of emergency medicine at Western Michigan University School of Medicine. He also serves as EMS medical director for Kalamazoo County. Fales was the first emergency physician to complete the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Security and Defense Executive Leaders Program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He will continue to represent members of the medical profession and Republicans.
Fitz has served as the Cass County Prosecutor for 14 years. He is vice-chairperson of the Michigan Supreme Court Attorney Grievance Commission and past president of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan. Fitz holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a law degree from Valparaiso University. He will continue to represent members who have been practicing law in this state for more than five years and Republicans.
Members will serve three-year terms expiring Sept. 27, 2020. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
