LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Hannah MacDonald of Alpena to the Underwater Salvage and Preserve Committee.
Supported by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the nine-member committee provides technical and other advice with respect to maintaining Michigan's 13 underwater preserves. It makes recommendations regarding the creation and boundaries of Great Lakes underwater preserves, reviews applications for underwater salvage permits, gives recommendations regarding issuance of permits, and provides input regarding the charging of permit fees and the use of revenue generated.
"I thank Hannah for her commitment to this board and to the important task of protecting Michigan’s underwater preserves," Snyder said.
MacDonald is a policy fellow for the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University, and previously served as a junior oceanographer programmer for the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. She currently volunteers for the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, is a youth leadership council member for EarthEcho International, and is the founder of Plastics F.L.O.A.T., promoting awareness of plastic pollution in her hometown. MacDonald is studying earth science at Michigan State University. She will replace Ronald Bloomfield.
MacDonald will serve a three-year term expiring Aug. 17, 2019. Her appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
