LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Duane Smith of Saline to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
MCOLES is mandated by statute to set standards for the selection, employment, licensing, retention, and training of law enforcement officers in the state of Michigan, and to promulgate rules to govern these functions.
“I thank Duane for his commitment to upholding law enforcement standards in Michigan,” Snyder said.
Smith has been a labor representative for the Police Officers Labor Council for 12 years and previously served 21 years with the Romulus Police Department. Smith holds an associate’s degree in law enforcement from Northwestern Michigan College, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ferris State University, and a master’s degree in interdisciplinary technology from the School of Police Staff and Command at Eastern Michigan University. He will represent the Michigan Police Officers Labor Council and fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Thomas Zulch.
Smith will serve the remainder of a term expiring Dec. 31, 2017. Appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
