Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment, reappointment to the Michigan Board of Medicine

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Melisa (Lisa) Oca of Ann Arbor as well as the reappointment of James Sondheimer of West Bloomfield to the Michigan Board of Medicine.

Housed within the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, the board oversees the practice of medicine and serves as the state's licensing board. It includes 19 members: 10 doctors, one physician's assistant and eight public members.

“Lisa and James’ medical experience will be an invaluable asset to this board,” Snyder said.

Appointment:

Oca is an attending physician for IHA – Neonatal Specialists, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Mount Holyoke College, a post baccalaureate certificate in pre-medicine from Columbia University, and a medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. She completed her post graduate medical residency and fellowship in Pediatrics and Neonatal Perinatal Medicine at the University of Michigan. She will represent physicians and replace Kara Morley-Smolek.

Reappointment:

Sondheimer is the chief of nephrology and hypertension and a professor of medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He previously served as the medical director of the hemodialysis unit and vice chief of nephrology at Harper Hospital. Sondheimer holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in physics from the City College of the City University of New York, as well as a doctorate from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a certificate in business medicine from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He will continue to represent physicians.

Members will serve four-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
