Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments to the State Board of Accountancy

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Paul Balas of Troy and Shelly Gower of Farmington Hills to the State Board of Accountancy.
The nine-member board oversees licensure and certification requirements for certified public accountants and public accounting firms.
“I thank these individuals for representing certified public accountants,” Snyder said. “Their knowledge of the accounting field gives me confidence they will positively impact this board.”
Balas is a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), LLP, serving as an international liaison for the PwC Global Quality Executive Team. He is a member of the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants and is a past chairman of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. Balas holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Michigan State University. He will represent certified public accountants and replace Matthew Howell.
Gower is a partner with Plante & Moran, PLLC, where she serves as the national director of professional standards, supervising all accounting and auditing technical specialists for the firm. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and the Center for Audit Quality’s Judgment Framework Task Force. Gower holds an associate degree in business administration from Oakland Community College and a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from Walsh College. She will represent certified public accountants and replace Michael Swartz.
Members will serve four-year terms expiring June 30, 2022. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
