Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment, reappointments to the Michigan Board of Counseling

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Harold Koviak of Cheboygan and the reappointments of Katie Bozek of Grand Rapids and Jana Simmons of Ferndale to the Michigan Board of Counseling.

The nine-member board assists the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs with the licensing and oversight of more than 9,000 counselors in Michigan.

“These individuals are knowledgeable and skilled in many different ways, and I thank them for lending their insight and abilities to this board," Snyder said.

Appointment:
Koviak is the assistant lodging comptroller at Boyne Highlands ski and golf resort where he has worked for 30 years. He also is the Burt Township supervisor and serves on the Michigan Townships Association Board of Directors. Koviak holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ferris State University and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. He will represent the general public and fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Therese Empie.

Reappointments:
Bozek is owner of Transitions Therapy, PLLC and program director for Families in Transition. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hope College and a master’s degree and a doctorate in marriage and family therapy/family and child ecology from Michigan State University. She will continue to represent statutorily regulated health professions.

Simmons is of counsel for Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker, LLP and previously served as a partner at Foley & Mansfield. Her practice is focused on federal American Indian law and tribal law. Simmons holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Northern Michigan University and a law degree from Roger Williams University. She will continue to represent the general public.

Koviak will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring June 30, 2021. Bozek and Simmons will serve four-year terms expiring June 30, 2022. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
