Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment to the Education Commission of the States

Friday, Sept. 28, 2018

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Sheila Alles of Northville to the Education Commission of the States.

The Education Commission of the States was created in 1965 to improve public education by facilitating the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders. Forty-nine states, three territories and the District of Columbia constitute the commission's current membership. Each member state or territory is represented by seven commissioners -- the governor and six other individuals.

"I thank Sheila for her continued commitment to improving education for all of Michigan’s students," Snyder said.

Alles serves as the interim state superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education. Previously, she served as the chief deputy superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education. Alles earned a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Michigan and an education specialist degree in administration and supervision from Wayne State University.

Alles will serve a term expiring at the pleasure of the Governor.
