Gov. Rick Snyder makes reappointments to the Child Lead Exposure Elimination Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the reappointments of Paul Haan of Grand Rapids, Rebecca Meuninck of Ann Arbor, and Lyke Thompson of Ann Arbor to the Child Lead Exposure Elimination Commission. 

The 21-member Commission is housed within the Department of Health and Human Services and acts in an advisory capacity to the Governor and the Director of the department. It also coordinates and collaborates with all levels of government and stakeholders regarding programs and policies related to the elimination of childhood lead exposure.

“I thank this group for their continued commitment to improving the health and wellness of Michigan children,” Snyder said.

Haan is the executive director of the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan, Inc., implementing community development solutions to end child lead exposure and address additional health concerns related to substandard housing. Haan holds a bachelor’s degree in communication and philosophy from Calvin College. He will continue to represent an organization that focuses on lead exposure advocacy.

Meuninck is the deputy director of the Ecology Center, where she develops environmental health programs and leads public policy campaigns to reduce children’s exposure to toxic chemicals. She is the director of the Michigan Network for Children’s Environmental Health, and serves as a member of the Necrotizing Enterocolitis Society and the Michigan Alliance for Lead Safe Homes. Meuninck holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental anthropology from the University of Michigan, as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. in anthropology from Michigan State University. She will continue to represent an organization that focuses on lead exposure advocacy.

Thompson is a professor in the department of political science and the director of the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University. He has been studying lead poisoning in Michigan since 1999. Thompson holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. in urban studies from The University of Texas, Arlington. He will continue to represent the research and technology community.

Members will serve four-year terms expiring Dec. 15, 2022.
