LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Dr. James Kober of West Olive to the Horse Racing Advisory Commission.
The seven-member advisory board created within the Michigan Department of Agriculture advises the Gaming Control Board executive director on the operation and promotion of horse racing statewide and makes recommendations to the Legislature to improve the regulatory structure of horse racing with the goal of maintaining its long-term viability.
"I thank Jim for lending his expertise to this commission," Snyder said. “His veterinarian knowledge will surely add great perspective to the horse racing industry.”
Kober is the assistant state veterinarian for the state of Michigan, the veterinarian and owner of Swine Veterinary Services of Michigan and is partner of Four Star Veterinary Services, LLC. Additionally, he is adjunct faculty for the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. Kober holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science, a master’s degree from Iowa State University, and a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Michigan State University. He will serve as the designee of the director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and replace Nancy Frank.
Kober will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring Oct. 31, 2020. His appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
