Michigan Unemployment Rate Remains Constant During July

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged over the month, remaining at 5.3 percent during July.

The U.S. unemployment rate increased by one-tenth of a percentage point over the month to 4.2 percent during July. Michigan’s July jobless rate was 1.1 percentage points higher than the national rate. The U.S. unemployment rate was unchanged over the year, while the statewide unemployment rate increased by half a percentage point since July 2024. Michigan recorded the third largest jobless rate in the nation during July, behind California (5.5 percent) and Nevada (5.4 percent).

Michigan’s workforce inched down by 0.1 percent over the month, while the national labor force was unchanged in July. Total statewide employment receded by 0.1 percent, a decrease comparable to the national employment reduction (-0.2 percent). The total number of unemployed people in the state fell by 0.4 percent over the month, while the national unemployment level rose by 3.2 percent.  

Over the year, Michigan’s labor force rose by 0.2 percent, while the U.S. workforce advanced by 1.2 percent. Statewide employment receded by 0.4 percent, while the U.S. employment total increased by 1.2 percent. The number of unemployed people in Michigan increased by 10.2 percent, compared to a 2.0 percent increase nationally since July 2024.
