Michigan Jobless Rate Recedes between September and November

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell by one-tenth of a percentage point between September and November to 5.0 percent.  

The national unemployment rate rose by two-tenths of a percentage point between September and November to 4.6 percent. Michigan’s November jobless rate was 0.4 percentage points larger than the national rate. The U.S. unemployment rate advanced by four-tenths of a percentage point over the year, while the statewide jobless rate receded by 0.2 percentage points since November 2024. Michigan had the fifth largest unemployment rate in the nation during November, behind California, New Jersey, Oregon, and Nevada.

Michigan’s total workforce receded by 0.3 percent between September and November, while the national labor force rose by 0.2 percent. Statewide employment edged down by 0.1 percent between September and November, and the U.S. employment level advanced by 0.1 percent during the same period. The total number of unemployed people in the state fell by 2.7 percent from September to November, while the national unemployment total rose by 3.0 percent.

Over the year, Michigan’s labor force declined by 0.7 percent, whereas the national workforce advanced by 1.9 percent. Statewide employment fell by 0.6 percent, while the U.S. employment total advanced by 1.6 percent. The number of unemployed people in Michigan was reduced by 4.2 percent, while the national number of unemployed rose by 10.0 percent since November 2024.
