Prices in the Detroit Metro Area Rise 2.3 Percent Since February 2025

Since February 2025, the price index for all items in the Detroit metropolitan statistical area (MSA) increased by 2.3 percent, one-tenth of a percentage point below the national price increase of 2.4 percent. The index for all items less food and energy rose by 2.4 percent in the Detroit MSA, nearly matching the 2.5 percent increase in the U.S. Over the year, the Detroit energy index declined by 0.3 percent, while U.S. energy costs rose 0.5 percent.

Over the year, only one major expenditure category recorded a decline in Detroit. The transportation index in Detroit fell by 0.8 percent, mainly due to decreases in used cars and trucks (-2.5 percent) and gasoline (-6.0 percent). Similarly, national prices saw a decline in used cars and trucks by 3.2 percent and gasoline by 5.6 percent over the same period.

Local food costs in the Detroit metro area advanced by 2.9 percent over the year, while food costs increased by 3.1 percent in the U.S. Within the broad food index, nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials (+6.7 percent) and meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+6.5 percent) recorded higher prices in Detroit than nationally (+5.6 and +0.4 percent, respectively).

Over the last 12 months, the housing index in the Detroit metro area rose by 3.6 percent, slightly above the national rise of 3.3 percent. Medical care costs in Detroit advanced by 4.6 percent, 1.2 percentage points higher than the U.S. increase. The cost of other goods and services in the Detroit region rose by 2.8 percent, which was outpaced by the national price increase (+5.1 percent).
