Inflation in the Detroit Metro Area Increases by 4.1 Percent Since April 2025

Since April 2025, the price index of all items in the Detroit metropolitan statistical area (MSA) rose 4.1 percent, three-tenths of a percentage point higher than the national price increase of 3.8 percent. Over the year, the price of all items less food and energy in the Detroit MSA advanced by 3.0 percent compared to 2.8 percent nationwide.

The energy index showed prices rose considerably over the year in Detroit and the U.S., with prices increasing 18.9 percent and 17.9 percent, respectively. The leading contributor to the rise in energy prices was gasoline, which saw a 25.8 percent increase over the year in the Detroit metro area. The cost of gasoline nationally outpaced that of metro Detroit by 2.6 percentage points, with prices rising by 28.4 percent since April 2025.

During the 12 months ending in April 2026, food prices in the Detroit MSA advanced by 2.8 percent, similar to the national increase of 3.2 percent. Items such as meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+7.3 percent), nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials (+5.1 percent), and fruits and vegetables (+4.6 percent) were leading contributors to rising food prices in Detroit. The U.S. experienced similar levels of price inflation across most food categories, apart from meats, poultry, fish, and eggs, which increased 5.8 percentage points less than in metro Detroit. The only major food category to see an over-the-year decline in both Detroit and the U.S. was dairy and related products (-9.4 percent and -0.6 percent, respectively).

Food prices in Detroit were mostly in line with national trends, with only a few categories showing broader differences.
