Tribal Affairs
Michigan is home to twelve federally recognized Tribes—each a sovereign nation with the right to govern its own people, land, and laws. Sovereignty means these Native nations can make decisions for their communities, protect their traditions, and uphold their own systems of government.
To honor this sovereignty, Treasury works with each Tribe through formal Tribal agreements, often called compacts. These agreements help avoid tax conflicts and ensure taxes are applied fairly—both on and off tribal lands. The goal is mutual respect, legal clarity, and economic fairness for everyone.
