Early Career

Allison Green, a Caro-born educator turned public servant, spent 15 years as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. That early career shaped a public life rooted in community service, pragmatism, and fiscal responsibility.

In his 14 years in the House of Representatives, Green served as Republican Floor Leader and Speaker of the House—underscoring the trust and respect he earned among colleagues.

Michigan’s Longest-Serving State Treasurer

In 1965, Governor George Romney appointed Green as Michigan’s 36th State Treasurer. Over his 13-year tenure, Green gained a reputation for meticulous financial oversight and a firm belief in conservative, responsible use of taxpayer dollars. He helped modernize the department while ensuring the state’s fiscal stability through changing economic conditions.

The Last Treasurer in the Capitol

Green was the last State Treasurer to work inside the Michigan State Capitol. During his time in office, Treasury’s massive vault—and the department itself—were relocated to the newly completed Treasury Building, now known as the Austin Building, marking the end of an era in Capitol operations.
