LANSING, MICH. As Michigan continues to face increasingly frequent and complex disasters that require coordinated response efforts across all levels of government, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared August as
Emergency Management Awareness Month. The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is recognizing the dedicated emergency management professionals who work year-round to help communities prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate disasters.
Throughout August, the MSP/EMHSD will highlight the critical work of emergency managers and the partnerships that strengthen Michigan’s emergency management system. Launched by the International Association of Emergency Managers, the annual campaign highlights the critical profession of emergency management and honors the dedicated specialists who work year-round to help keep communities safe.
"Emergency managers are on the front lines before, during and after disasters, working tirelessly to protect lives, coordinate resources and help communities recover,” said Governor Whitmer. “During Emergency Management Awareness Month, we recognize the dedicated professionals across Michigan whose leadership and commitment help keep our state safe and resilient."
"Emergency management is built on partnerships, planning and preparedness,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police and state director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. “Every day, emergency managers work alongside first responders, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and private-sector partners to coordinate response efforts and strengthen our ability to respond to and recover from disasters. Their expertise and dedication are essential to protecting Michigan communities when disasters strike."
During Emergency Management Awareness Month, the MSP/EMHSD is launching a new social media conversation series called ‘Ready Michigan.’ Launching on Facebook and YouTube platforms, ‘Ready Michigan’ will feature conversations with emergency management professionals and partners who share their experiences, lessons learned and insights on how residents can better prepare for emergencies.
Residents can support emergency management efforts by taking steps to prepare for emergencies, including creating an emergency plan, building an emergency supply kit, staying informed about local hazards and signing up for emergency alerts.
