Join author, photographer and architectural historian Dale A. Carlson as he discusses the history of numerous significant structures and art installations on Detroit's famed Belle Isle, as well as the careers of numerous contributing artists and architects over multiple eras. From Albert Kahn's William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse (1930) on the island's western extreme to Cass Gilbert's James Scott Memorial Fountain (1925) on the east, Carlson's presentation will briefly examine 10 more essential Belle Isle landmarks in between, including the Mason & Rice-designed Police Station (1893), Mason & Kahn's Aquarium and Conservatory (1901-1904), Henry Merwin Shrady's timeless sculptural portrait of Civil War General Alpheus Starkey Williams (1912-1921) and William Kapp's Dossin Great Lakes Museum (1959-1960), among others. Carlson's presentation will include both his professional photography and compelling, relevant historical images and era-specific newspaper clippings that give life to the historical scenarios recounted.
