Shore-to-Shore Trail
Shore-to-Shore Trail
The 220-mile Michigan Shore-to-Shore Trail stretches across Michigan, beginning in Empire near Lake Michigan and ending in Au Sable on Lake Huron. It passes beneath I-75 north of Grayling and follows the historic Au Sable River. A significant portion of the trail, 112 miles, traverses the Huron-Manistee National Forest. There are two additional northern and southern spur trails.
Primarily used by horseback riders, there are multiple equestrian-friendly campgrounds and group trail camps along the trail that are managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources or Huron-Manistee National Forest.
This trail is maintained with the help from the members of the Michigan Trail Riders Association.
Equestrian groups planning a ride may need to acquire a use permit. If a group will utilize multiple DNR campgrounds, please contact the Cadillac Operations Service Center at 231-775-9727, ext. 6006. If the group will be utilize only one of the campgrounds, please contact the unit manager for that location.
