Gov. Whitmer Applauds U.S. Department of Transportation for Grants to Improve Michigan Airport Infrastructure

LANSING, Mich. -- Today Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation announced $477 million in airport infrastructure grants to 264 airports in 44 states, the Pacific Islands, and the District of Columbia, including airports in Flint, Marquette County, Lansing, Saginaw, Sault Ste. Marie, and Traverse City.

“This is great news for communities across the state that rely on these airports for transportation and job opportunities,” said Gov. Whitmer. “This funding will help local economies thrive, improve air travel, and create more jobs for Michiganders. Just as the federal government has shown a commitment to improving access to safe transit by issuing these grants, I’m ready to work to ensure all Michiganders can get to their destinations safely. That starts with passing a budget that raises $2.5 billion to fix the damn roads so everyone can drive to work and drop their kids at school without blowing a tire or busting a windshield. Let’s get to work.”

The federal grants issued today include a total of $8,826,455 for Bishop International Airport in Flint, $678,150 for Sawyer International Airport in Marquette County, $1,095,080 for the Michigan State Block Grant Program in Lansing, $4,649,973 for the MBS International Airport in Saginaw, $155,325 for the Chippewa County International Airport in Sault Ste. Marie, and $1,124,100 for the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City.

Grant recipients will use this funding for projects to rehabilitate and construct runways and taxiways and acquire and replace equipment to ensure the safety of passengers and airline workers across Michigan.

These grants represent the third allotment of the total $3.18 billion in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for U.S. Airports.
