Gov. Whitmer Releases Statement on SCOTUS Tariff Decision
LANSING, Mich.—Today, Governor Whitmer released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, regarding President Trump’s ability to impose sweeping tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a decisive and welcome step forward.
“The administration’s tariffs have driven up costs on cars, groceries, energy, and housing, causing massive uncertainty for families and businesses. Last year, America had its biggest manufacturing trade deficit ever, leading to job losses and production cuts.
“Now, the Supreme Court has ruled that a large swath of the administration’s tariffs are illegal. I’m hopeful that this decision will force Congress and the President to the table to work together on a more commonsense, strategic trade policy.
“Going forward, we need a trade policy that brings jobs back home, lowers costs, and reduces uncertainty for families and businesses. Let’s work with our neighbors and allies to get this done.”
