April 8 - 12, 2019: Week of the Young Child

WHEREAS, the future of our great state depends on the quality of life we provide to Michigan’s young children today; and,
WHEREAS, the first five years of life are critical to the healthy development of a child’s brain; and,
WHEREAS, a young child’s development depends largely on parents and caregivers for survival and protection; and,
WHEREAS, a close positive relationship between a young child and caregiver is the best way to nourish a child’s growing brain; and,
WHEREAS, as parents, caregivers, teachers, lawmakers, and community leaders, it is our collective responsibility to ensure special care and attention are made to support the unique needs of each young child so they can grow and mature into loving, capable, healthy, and productive adults; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we recognize and encourage efforts that foster the development, education and well-being of Michigan’s young children;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 8-12, 2019, as Week of the Young Child in Michigan.
