May 2-8, 2021: Correctional Officers and Employees Week

WHEREAS, the officers and employees who work in our correctional facilities have dedicated themselves to the critical task of upholding the safety and well-being of every Michigander each and every day; and,

WHEREAS, in an environment that may become intimidating, aggressive, or even hostile, correctional officers and employees are skilled professionals who are trained to maintain composure while preserving the safety of individuals and protecting persons who may be dangerous to themselves or others; and,

WHEREAS, these honorable men and women are hard-working, committed public servants, and, without their expertise and service, Michigan's correctional facilities would be unable to operate successfully and efficiently; and,

WHEREAS, during the current COVID-19 pandemic, correctional officers and employees have put their lives on the frontline to maintain the safety of our correctional facilities and ensure the health and well-being of those incarcerated, while protecting our communities; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Corrections Organization to recognize every correctional officer and employee who serves in Michigan's state prisons and local professionals who keep county jails safe and thank them for the essential role they play in helping to protect the people of Michigan;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2-8, 2021 as Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Michigan.
