WHEREAS, the National School Breakfast Program was permanently established in 1975 to provide low-income children in public and non-profit private schools and residential childcare institutions with a nutritious morning meal each school day, and in 1989, the National School Breakfast Week was launched to raise the awareness of the availability of school breakfast meals; and,

WHEREAS, the 2022 theme for National School Breakfast Week, "Take Off with School Breakfast," presents an opportunity to remind parents and the entire school community that school breakfasts help build healthy, lifelong eating habits and provide a healthy and energizing start to the day for students, helping to ensure academic success so students can "take off" and soar to reach their goals; and,

WHEREAS, research shows that children who eat breakfast are more likely to reach higher levels of achievement in reading and mathematics, perform better on assessments, have increased concentration, and maintain a healthy weight; and,

WHEREAS, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, school nutrition professionals have worked relentlessly to provide meals to students when learning was in-person or remote, helping to ensure food security for all students; and,

WHEREAS, more than 79,000,000 school breakfasts were served to students in the previous school year free of charge to all students; and,

WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Health and Nutrition Services, supports all school food service programs, including the school breakfast program, ensuring the health and well-being of the future leaders of our state; and,

WHEREAS, this week is devoted to recognizing the dedicated school nutrition professionals who make the National School Breakfast Program a reality in their community schools;
