April 8, 2022: Opening Day

WHEREAS, April 8, 2022, is Opening Day at Comerica Park as the Detroit Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox in the first game of the season; and,

WHEREAS, baseball is America’s favorite past time; and,

WHEREAS, the Detroit Tigers are beloved by Michiganders throughout the state, and bring particular pride to the Detroit community; and,

WHEREAS, today the Detroit Tigers will begin their 121st season as part of Major League Baseball; and,

WHEREAS, the first ever Opening Day for the Tigers was on April 24, 1901; and,

WHEREAS, the Tigers have called Comerica Park home since April 11, 2000, when they defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-2; and,

WHEREAS, this year the Tigers, led by manager A.J. Hinch, hope to improve their all-time Opening Day record to 57-60; and,

WHEREAS, Tigers fans will eagerly tune in this season as Miguel “Miggy” Cabrera seeks his 3000th career hit, which would place him in an elite club of baseball legends; and

WHEREAS, the Tigers have won four World Series, winning their most recent in 1984; and,

WHEREAS, Michiganders are excited to kick off another season of Detroit Tigers baseball and root for a return to the World Series;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 8, 2022 as Opening Day in Michigan.
