WHEREAS, international trade contributes to Michigan’s commerce, thereby enhancing the economic vitality and strength of our state, the security of our jobs, and the well-being of our citizens; and,
WHEREAS, export and import activities support 1,187,900 Michigan jobs and connect consumers within the state to a myriad of goods and services available in the global market; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan exports contributed $55.5 billion to our economy in 2021 alone, making companies in the state that export 17 percent more profitable than companies that do not; and,
WHEREAS, international commerce in all its aspects—trade, travel, and investment—is beneficial to the community of nations and conducive to the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the world; and,
WHEREAS, I urge business, labor, agricultural, educational, and civic groups, as well as the people of Michigan and our governing entities, to observe World Trade Week with gatherings, discussions, exhibits, ceremonies, and other activities designed to promote a greater awareness of the importance of world trade to our state’s economy and to the strength of the free world; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 1-7, 2022 as World Trade Week in Michigan.
