WHEREAS, Women in Global Trade Day is a global campaign to promote gender equality in trade and the impact of global trade on women’s economic empowerment and the economy; and,
WHEREAS, research shows that trade increases women’s wages and economic equality yet women are still underrepresented in global trade; and,
WHEREAS, the number of women-owned businesses in Michigan continues to grow, and trade has the potential to increase the global competitiveness of Michigan’s women-owned businesses; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan women-owned businesses that are actively involved in international trade have the potential to grow their businesses, create new jobs, and contribute to the economic growth of the state; and,
WHEREAS, no one should be restricted from economic opportunities because of gender. Women In Global Trade Day is an opportunity to publicize the opportunities through which women can gain from trade and recognize the role of trade in promoting gender equality;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 10, 2022 as Women In Global Trade Day in Michigan.
