June 2022: Airbag Recall Repair Month

WHEREAS, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) administered over 1,000 safety recalls affecting nearly 35 million vehicles and other equipment in 2021; and,

WHEREAS, recalls occur when safety-related defects are found in vehicles and equipment, including tires, car seats, airbags, and other equipment; and

WHEREAS, when left unrepaired, recalled airbags put drivers and passengers at risk of death and injury; and,

WHEREAS, tens of millions of vehicles with Takata air bags are under recall. Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause these air bags to explode when deployed, potentially causing injury or death; and,

WHEREAS, Check To Protect, a program of the National Safety Council, is educating residents about these defective airbags through a comprehensive approach to vehicle recall awareness; and,

WHEREAS, automakers notify vehicle owners of safety recalls via their addresses on file, or you can check for recalls using the free tools at CheckToProtect.org or NHTSA.gov/Recalls.

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of all who put themselves behind the wheel to make safety a priority by getting their defective airbags repaired immediately; and,

WHEREAS, urging all citizens of our community to become aware of the inherent danger of unrepaired airbag recalls, and for drivers and passengers alike to ensure each other’s safety through a commitment to recall awareness and immediate action to fix open recalls;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2022 as Airbag Recall Repair Month in Michigan.
