July 20, 2022: Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, older adults are rethinking retirement through volunteerism; and,
WHEREAS, nearly 28 percent of older adults volunteered last year, more than any other group; and,
WHEREAS, we must retain the talents and skills of the older adults who help communities in a variety of ways; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s 18 Foster Grandparent programs and 13 Senior Companion programs provide low- income adults, ages 55 and older, challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities in 60 counties throughout the state; and,
WHEREAS, partnering with more than 400 non-profit organizations, Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs meet a variety of personal and community needs that make a positive difference in areas such as long term care, poverty, health care and safety; and,
WHEREAS, in Michigan, an average of 1,197 Foster Grandparent volunteers and 613 Senior Companion volunteers contribute more than 400,000 hours of service, and their significant contributions enrich the lives of so many in the communities in which they serve; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Adult Services Agency and the Michigan Community Service Commission within MDHHS to raise awareness of Michigan’s Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs and to recognize the outstanding service of foster grandparent volunteers currently serving throughout the state providing a positive impact. Their nurturing, mentoring and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many children and have helped strengthen our communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 20, 2022 as Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Volunteer Day in Michigan.
