August 1-8, 2022: Buy Michigan Week

WHEREAS, as we continue to grow Michigan’s economy, every resident in our state can contribute to strengthening Michigan’s economy by buying locally produced goods and services; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to vibrant industries including manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism; and,

WHEREAS, buying locally encourages small business growth and helps maintain good paying jobs in Michigan; and,

WHEREAS, in 2021, Michigan had record small business growth with more than 150,000 Michiganders applying to start small businesses; and,

WHEREAS, according to the Michigan Retailers Association, retailing is responsible for 794,249 jobs in Michigan, a number that could rise through increased local purchases; and,

WHEREAS, if Michigan shoppers switched just one in ten of their out-of-state purchases to a Michigan retailer, it would generate an additional $2.2 billion in economic activity and create more than 16,000 new jobs, amounting to $660 million in additional wages; and,

WHEREAS, each purchase made at a Michigan store keeps more money in our communities, improves the vitality of our local economies and quality of life, and directly supports our communities, our schools, and our infrastructure; and,

WHEREAS, when we buy locally, we strengthen our commitment to community and put Michigan on a path to economic prosperity; and,

WHEREAS, during this week and throughout the year, we encourage Michigan residents to take advantage of the wonderful industries our state has to offer by “buying Michigan” and show support for Michigan-based businesses across the state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 1-8, 2022, as Buy Michigan Week in Michigan.
