August 30, 2022: U.S. Heartland Global Leadership Day

WHEREAS, Michigan is a globally connected state, with relationships with countries and communities around the world, as well as maintaining a wide variety of global relationships; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan agricultural exports contribute to America’s global effort to fighting hunger and poverty, support 1.1 million jobs and contribute $3.1 billion to the Michigan economy; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan colleges and universities, together enroll over 31,000 international students per year, contributing nearly 1.1 billion to Michigan’s economy; and,
WHEREAS, the work of America's diplomats and development professionals, many from Michigan, who are on the frontlines around the world helps protect our citizens here at home; and,
WHEREAS, since 1961, over 7,700 Peace Corps volunteers from Michigan have served overseas; and,
WHEREAS, U.S. leadership through investments in diplomacy and global development is critical to protect the health, security, and economic interests of Michigan's citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 30, 2022 as U.S. Heartland Global Leadership Day in Michigan.
