February 14-19, 2024: National Salute to Veteran Patients Week

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to nearly 530,000 veterans; and,
WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the people who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining our freedoms and way of life; our veterans are brave and selfless individuals who, when duty called, willingly put themselves in harm's way to defend the lives and liberty of others; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 100,000 patients receive medical treatment daily in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and nine million veterans receive care every year; and,
WHEREAS, the annual salute to veteran patients is an opportunity to pay tribute to veterans of the U.S. armed services who are cared for in VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, domiciliaries, and nursing homes; and,
WHEREAS, during our salute, we invite Michiganders, veteran groups, military personnel, civic organizations, businesses, and schools to host activities in recognition of veterans that might include sending valentine cards to veterans at our state veteran homes; school essay contests about sacrifice and military service; and fostering veteran recognition programs to connect veterans to benefits and services; and,
WHEREAS, this week also provides our residents with an opportunity to become acquainted with the volunteer opportunities available in VA medical centers and veteran homes; and,
WHEREAS, we recognize and honor the role of Michigan’s veteran homes which provide essential support and care for our brave heroes;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 14 – 19, 2024, as National Salute to Veteran Patients Week in Michigan.
