May 10, 2024: Child Care Professional Appreciation Day

WHEREAS, child care provides a safe, nurturing place for the enrichment and development of thousands of children in Michigan and is a vital force in our economy; and

WHEREAS, child care programs, which are mostly small businesses, run and staffed predominantly by women, are critical partners in our communities and local economies as they work to meet the needs of more families; and

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan recognizes that child care has been and continues to be a lifeline for families, communities, and the economy. As such, Michigan has increased support for child care providers including continuing state investments to expand access to quality care, improve compensation, and lower costs for families and providers.

WHEREAS, I proposed Pre-K for All earlier this year in my sixth balanced executive budget recommendation to save parents thousands a year and give every child a solid academic foundation; and

WHEREAS, the future depends on the quality of the early childhood experiences  today, and support for high-quality child care represents a worthy commitment to our children’s future; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 10, 2024, as Child Care Professional Appreciation Day in Michigan and urge all Michiganders to recognize child care professionals for their important contributions to our state, communities, families, and children.
